NABC WINDS UP FOR MINNESOTA PLAYERS
It looks like a pretty successful NABC for Minnesota players this fall, with more than three dozen players from our state getting some masterpoints (and fun).  Tops on the masterpoint board for our group is Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] who earned 91.29 points the past 11 days.  That's pretty impressive!  Here's a look at the final masterpoint awards for your fellow Minnesotans - and now it's back into the local clubs for those holiday parties (and sectionals).

ABOUT NEXT WEEKEND. . .
. . .choose wisely.

December 7 2024
MINNESOTA PLAYERS STILL DOING GREAT IN VEGAS
Randy Okubo [St Paul] and partner Nancy Joe [Austin TX] had a superb 67.42% game this morning to come in 1st overall in the Fast Pairs today; they finished this afternoon with 28.11 gold points, coming in 2nd overall of 42 pairs in the event.  (They just missed coming in 1st for the day by 2 matchpoints of more than 430. . .it was close.)  This has shot Randy to the top of the chart for Minnesota players at this NABC - well done!

Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis] played in the bracketed teams today, tying another team for 1st place in their bracket - also winning their bracket today was Jeffrey Walker [Eagan] and Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] for another 11.16 gold points - not bad for a day at the office.

Two more days to go at the NABC.

December 6 2024
FINAL THREE DAYS IN VEGAS REMAIN
Many Minnesotans are familiar with snowbird Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka], who claimed at the Rochester Med City Regional this year "I'm on a mission!".  She certainly is - and with Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] they are playing in the NABC Mixed Pairs today at the Fall NABC.  They are joined in this competition today with another pair of Minnesota players, Rebecca Anspach [St Paul] and Keith Connolly [St Paul].  The good news: both of these pairs did well enough today to go on to tomorrow's final two sessions.

There are still about a dozen Minnesota players who are sticking with the NABC through the second weekend - and then they'll be back to the cold (and warmth of the upcoming Holiday Tournament!).

PARTY BRIDGE BACK IN VOGUE
With the holiday season here, it's time for that once-in-a-year "party bridge is ok!" time of year, with your local club's celebrations.  Most bridge clubs will have some sort of party atmosphere get-together for you - check with your local club - but here are a few of the parties about to take place cross Minnesota.
Holiday Tournament, Bridge Center of St Paul  Coming up is the four-day holiday celebration that is the Holiday Tournament in Roseville's BCSP location.  Their charity this year is once again Every Meal, donate by clicking here.
The Rochester DBC will have their holiday game and brunch on Monday, December 9th.  Their charity this year is Family Promise, and you can make a donation by clicking here.
The Woodbury Bridge Club also is having its annual holiday get-together on Monday December 9th.  More info on that party can be found here.
There are a few potlucks at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Roseville location this month - which will also be an opportunity to party hard (and play hard!).  Thursday, December 19th, Monday, December 23rd, and Tuesday, December 31st are all potluck celebrations of the holidays and upcoming new year.
This is not a complete listing of the holiday get-togethers across the state - but it's a good start!  Check with your local club to see when to bring a dish to share and partake in the fun.

THE REPORT FROM THE DESERT - DAY 6
Earl Connor [Woodbury] and Dan McElroy [Burnsville] came in 3rd place overall among 30 pairs in the afternoon 299er game today - for 2.11 red points.  In today's Gold Rush, Joseph Kivel [Newport] and Gregory Stromath [Lake Elmo] finished 17th out of 104 pairs for 1.81 gold points!  And Lou Tesler [Eden Prairie] along with Jeff Walker [Eagan] and another pair made up a team that won their 7-team bracket today for 10.88 gold points.  Now it's over three dozen players from Minnesota who have scratched in the desert - the latest list to your left.

December 3 2024
MINNESOTA PLAYERS HAVING FUN IN VEGAS
Through five days of play at the NABC in Las Vegas, there are now 32 Minnesota players who have scored some masterpoints.  Red, gold, platinum, they are all being awarded in one event after another - and our local players are seeing masterpoint totals mount.

The final two sessions of the Super Senior Pairs took place today, and Tom Grue [Apple Valley] along with his partner from Las Vegas won the opening session with a 63.10% game.  This was enough to propel them into 4th place overall heading into the final session - finishing 17th out of 56 pairs for 10.91 platinum points.  Mike Flader [Eagan] and Joel Kramer [Minneapolis] earned 8.89 platinum points in the same event, and Sue Jackson [St Paul] and Stephen Jackson [St Paul] won 7.73 platinum points.

Today's Gold Rush saw Karl Hansen [St Paul] and his partner from New Jersey with a nice 63.13% game in the opening session which was good for 2nd place out of 92 pairs!  Then - lunch happened - and the afternoon wasn't quite as fun.  (We've all been there.)  Karl still got 1.53 gold points today - well done!

More Minnesotans are showing up out in Nevada, and those 32 players now getting masterpoints are listed to your left.  Best of luck to everyone tomorrow.

HOLIDAY TOURNAMENT SECTIONAL COMING UP
St Paul's Holiday Tournament hosted by the Bridge Center of St Paul in Roseville is coming up next week, and once again players will be ready to receive "gifts" at the table during this season of giving.  Here is a look at the flyer (below, right, click on it to open in a new window) - and also a look at the past champions of this tournament (directly to your right).  Will Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] win this tournament for an unprecedented sixth time in the last 20 years?  Or will someone new be added to the list of tournament champions?  Table counts over the years are also listed (the chart below, left), with the best showing in 20 years coming just last year at the Bridge Center of St Paul's new location in Roseville.  Weather can be tricky this time of year, and it's always a question mark when scheduling a big event so far in advance for December.  But the cards will be inside, where it's nice and warm.  Once again, all donations will benefit Every Meal - so be sure to bring a non-perishable food donation or a few extra $$$ for such a great cause.  You can also make a donation to Every Meal by clicking here.  And make plans to attend the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday event next week.

NABC RESULTS - THROUGH DAY 4
Another stellar day for Minnesota bridge players at the NABC in Las Vegas today, with Aly El-Selehdar [Minnetonka] and Lynne Castoldi [Minnetonka] finishing 2nd in the 0-10K Swiss Teams competition.  That's good for 52.50 masterpoints and several of those are platinum.  In the Super Senior Pairs, Sue Jackson [Roseville] and Stephen Jackson [Roseville] came in 3rd today out of 114 pairs - that's terrific - and joining them in the second day of competition there is Mike Flader [Eagan] and Joel Kramer [Minneapolis] who had a really nice first session (3rd place!).  They held on to also qualify for tomorrow's two sessions.  And Randy Okubo [St Paul] had two terrific games today in the Open Pairs, a 64.65% and a 63.20%, to finish 1st overall among 162 pairs. . .and that 1st place finish was not even close.  39.19 gold points was his reward.

Here is hoping everyone at the tournament has a good time - and gets some masterpoints.

December 1 2024
NABC RESULTS - THROUGH DAY 3
Today in Las Vegas saw Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] finishing up in 11th place out of the remaining 130 pairs in the NAIL Life Master competition - for 31.25 platinum points - really well done.  Keith Thompson [Bloomington] and Michele Grindal [Minneapolis] scored 6.29 gold points today in bracket 8 of the teams game, and they're all part of the 19 Minnesota players who have scratched some points at the Fall NABC through just the first three days.  Nothing yet from the Las Vegas Metro police blotters.

November 30 2024
ALL IN THE FAMILY
Out at the Las Vegas NABC today, Arlyce Anderson [Mankato] teamed up with her son, Erik Anderson [Reno] to play in the morning 299er game.  Sitting 6NS in an 11-table game, they came in 1st in their direction, earning a section top with a terrific 56.15% score.  Great to see Minnesota players doing well in all these NABC events!  (H/T: Kim H)

LOCALS HITTING VEGAS JACKPOTS - UPDATE
Minnesota players who are at the NABC in Las Vegas this week are doing pretty well.  Playing in the Life Masters Pairs, Bob Schachter [Eden Prairie] and Paul Meerschaert [Long Lake] came in 13th out of 264 pairs in the first session of play; Keith Connolly [St Paul] playing with Richard Newell [Des Moines] also are "above the fold" getting some platinum masterpoints in this event.  Of the 264 pairs that entered this competition, 130 pairs are going on to tomorrow's play - and all three of these Minnesota players qualified for tomorrow as of the moment.  (The official qualifiers will be listed after any score corrections.)  Well done!

A couple of Minnesota college alums Kyra Helmbold [Minneapolis] and Cecilia Ehrlichman [Northfield] are working their way through the Soloway Knockout Teams.  They played four matches today, losing their first three (-2 IMPs, -24, -11) but roaring back to win their 4th (+28 IMPs) and come in 68th out of 103 teams today.  Here's a look at the scratch these players (and more!) are getting after a couple of days in the desert.

UPDATE:  Sure enough, a couple of score corrections came in and bumped Keith Connolly from 130th to 132nd place - and out of tomorrow's competition.  He, along with Tom Grue [Apple Valley] and Gregg Van Dyke [Key Largo FL] will be entering something new tomorrow.

BRIDGE CENTER OF ST PAUL THANKS YOU
This is the time of year for giving, and for giving thanks, and the Bridge Center of St Paul's Board of Directors wanted to express their appreciation for the many donations they have received during their 2024 Fall Appeal.  From the Board:
We want to very much thank everyone for their generous and timely support of our 2024 Fall Appeal for new equipment.   Your donations, along with matching funds from Units 103 and 178, have allowed us to go forward with the purchase of a new dealing machine, chairs, and a new microphone and PA system.

All of this would not have been possible without your donations and the matching funds from Units 103 and 178 ($2,500 and $500, respectively).   Most recently, Unit 178 has offered our club the use of some chairs they currently have in storage.   Again, many thanks to both Minnesota bridge units.

We will leave the Appeal open through our December Sectional tournament ending December 15, 2024.   Any additional monies we receive will go toward the purchase of some additional needs including new portable cooling unit(s) for our future tournaments, replacement boards, new cards, and Bridge supplies to make the game better.

We asked for your help…..you responded generously!   Many, many thanks to all of you.   We go forward with a healthy financial outlook for 2025.

    Sincerely,
Board of Directors Bridge Center of Saint Paul

November 28 2024
HAPPY THANKSGIVING
Minnesota bridge players no doubt have plenty of holiday travel plans, and some of those plans may even include a flight to Las Vegas NV this week.  The ACBL's Fall NABC in Las Vegas gets going tomorrow; we'll have an update on how Minnesota players are doing in the NABC competition as the games go forward.  But whether you are heading to Vegas or across town this week for some turkey, safe travels!

A NOVEMBER HAT TRICK OFF THE ICE
John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] earned a hat trick this month - playing with Barb Zipoy [Bloomington] in Monday's Edina game!
For many bridge players out there, a 70.00% game seems completely out of reach - and they are tough to come by, even for the more experienced players.  But this month John Schlundt has picked up three 70%+ games - and the month is not yet over.

Monday, John played with Barb Zipoy and recorded a terrific 76.70% game.  They had 7 top boards out of 24; Barb's last 70% game was about a year and a half ago on June 16, 2023 (when she paired up with Mary Sass [Apple Valley]), so this was also a great result for Barb!  John's other big games this month took place on a couple of Wednesday mornings, with his regular partner Joe Koester [Brooklyn Park] - a 77.84% game on the 13th along with a 70.74% game one week before in the Royal STaC.

You may recall that Barb and John were the big Minnesota winners in the Royal STaC week this month - here they teamed up as a partnership to score this stellar 76.70% game Monday.  Congratulations to both of you!

SATURDAY AFT'N 11/30 GAME CANCELLATION - IS BACK ON!
Tony Ames' [Minnetonka] 12:30p game this Saturday at the Bridge Center of St Paul has been cancelled.  Take this opportunity for more leftovers (or perhaps more shopping?).  But this Saturday, November 30th, the game has been cancelled.  (The fun resumes the following week.)

UPDATE (2pm WED):  It's back on!  A referee has been secured and the Saturday afternoon game in Roseville is apparently going to be held after all.  NOTE that properly refrigerated leftovers will keep until after the game Saturday - and shopping is usually cheaper on Monday anyway.

November 26 2024
PRE-HOLIDAY TABLES DOING GREAT
With the snowbirds away - and smaller club games relative to the summer - how are Minnesota's bridge clubs faring as we head into the holidays?  Actually, Minnesota clubs are doing pretty well.  Having a look at the last eight weeks (October 1 through November 25), face-to-face club tables are up +7.0% over the same eight-week period last year.  (This is strictly club games and does not include any tournament tables.)  Outstate Minnesota has seen a rise of 7.0% over the period (626 tables this year vs 585 last year) and the Twin Cities Metro area has seen the same rise of 7.0% (1,075 tables vs 1,004 in 2023).  Even without the tournament tables from the Autumn Harvest Sectional, the fact that these table counts are still growing across the board - even into the later fall - is terrific news.

ON THE TABLE AT THE LA$ VEGA$ NABC
Minneapolis is hosting the 2026 Summer NABC of course, and this week there are two motions to watch that will be discussed at the upcoming NABC in Las Vegas which will have an impact on our tournament.
First, ACBL entry fees for team games are generally per team - not per player - with the exception of some ACBL NABC+ team games.  With Minneapolis hosting an NABC in 2026, this would be a big change for team games at our upcoming NABC.  The current per-player policy nets the ACBL more than $100,000 per year from five- and six-person teams (source: Jonathan Steinberg, D1) - but players don't like to pay 100% and play less than that.  The early betting line (remember, it's Vegas) is that ACBL management likes the idea - and the change could take place as early as 2025.  We will see.

Second is a motion to give full overall awards to all players on a team who play 50% of the boards in a one-day team event.  The current ACBL policy is that you get a percentage of overall awards based on how much you play - recognizing that there are rewards for multi-day events.  (They are very different from a one-day event.)  Arguments on both sides of this issue are expected to be spirited.
Once the meetings get going we should have some answers.  Stay tuned.

DECEMBER CLUB CALENDARS
Here comes the only acceptable "party bridge" of the year - with club holiday get-togethers on Monday, December 9th at both Woodbury and Rochester, and the four-day Holiday Sectional at the Bridge Club of St Paul.  Check with your local club for any festivities!  And as this is generally the season for bridge parties and some festive card games, here are the club calendars for December.  (Click on any calendar to enlarge it and open in a new window.)

18,000 MASTERPOINTS PASSED
Friday's game at the Bridge Center of St Paul featured a delightful 65.16% game for first place as the partnership of Terry Beckman [Brooklyn Park] and David Collins [Fridley] topped the seven tables in play.  The top award in the game was enough to push Terry over the 18,000 masterpoint mark (now at 18,000.93) on his way to who-knows-how-many coming down the road.  Lots of playing and lots of playing well has served Terry well so far - and his 18,000.93 is tops in Unit 103, tops in all of Minnesota, and good enough for 5th place in District 14.

ST CLOUD SHOWS HOW IT IS DONE
The St Cloud club celebrated a few recent milestones with a bit of cake and festivity this past week.  Celebrating Kathy Stadther [St Cloud]'s recent Life Master achievement, along with Jim Schnepf [Avon] and Shirley Richardson [St Joseph] who became Ruby Life Masters last month, a party was held in their honor on Friday.  (In addition to the cake, there was also a spot of bridge, with Jim and his partner coming in 1st overall - Shirley and her partner coming in 2nd overall - and Kathy and her partner [who was her partner at the game where Kathy became LM] getting some scratch as well!)

"GOLD FOR GOOD" GETS GOING NEXT MONTH
The ACBL has a program next month to benefit the hardest hit areas of the Southeastern US that have been hit by hurricanes this season; notably North Carolina and Florida.  The program is being administered by the ACBL Charity Foundation and donations will be sent to these areas through the World Central Kitchen and Direct Relief organizations.

The ACBL's program is called "Gold For Good", and if you'd like to participate there is a $30 entry fee.  This entry fee is what goes as your donation to disaster relief, but it also upgrades all of your games that week to be eligible for gold points.

ALL of your game scores that week are eligible for the program, including your local club games and those at the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Sectional.  There are two weeks during which you can upgrade your games, December 9-14 and December 16-21.  You can read more about this program by clicking here.

MGSC'S FRIDAY NIGHT SPECIAL
It's getting to be that time of year once again - when party bridge is in favor - and the Minnesota Grand Slam Club is kicking things off this Friday evening over at the Bridge Center of St Paul in Roseville.

There is a face-to-face bridge game Friday at 6:30pm this week; but everything gets going a half-hour earlier at 6pm.  Your $5 entry fee (holiday markdowns already taking place!) includes refreshments and a light supper before the cards come out.  They've got a Club Championship to run, and this is the perfect venue for that rating - so look for extra masterpoints.  The type of game (pairs? teams? GNT qualifier?) is up to you.  Players are asked to RSVP by emailing the MGSC as follows:
    1) Send an RSVP to mgscbridgeclub-at-gmail.com if you are planning to play
    2) Indicate who your partner is - OR if you need a partner
    3) What type of game you would prefer (pair/team/GNT Qualifier team)
Please note that this in-person, face-to-face get-together will take the place of the MGSC's online Tuesday evening game this week.  It promises to be a great start to the holiday season - and the weather inside in Roseville promises to be perfect for cards.

November 17 2024
SUNDAY EVENING GAME "MOVIN' ON UP"
Every Sunday, Keith Connolly [St Paul] provides a lesson at the Bridge Center of St Paul prior to the 6:30pm game there.  That continues tonight, and again next Sunday evening (when it's a teams game, and as a qualifier for the Grand Nationals Teams).

But starting on December 1st, this lesson and game are moving up 90 minutes - so the lesson will be taught at 4:30pm and the game starting at 5:00pm.  Make note of the new time for this Sunday game (and lesson) - and make a partnership to play in it!

THE TWO TYPES OF MOST DIFFICULT DEFENDERS

YOU'RE ROUGHLY ONE MONTH OUT
You are one month out from the Bridge Center of St Paul's Holiday Tournament!  The four-day silver-point masterpoint-fest will get going on Thursday, December 12th.  It features a little bit of everything (Pair/Team games, two-session pairs, Swiss teams) and all the details can be found by clicking on the flyer to your left.

Once again this year their local charity will be Every Meal, which fights childhood hunger; cash and food donations will be accepted at the tournament.  Get your partnerships together as it's never too early to schedule them for the Holiday Tournament!

NOVEMBER'S MINNESOTA MILESTONES
Here is a special shout-out to the 31 Minnesota players who made their next rank in the masterpoint world.  A new Diamond Life Master (and Gold Life Master!) are among the 31 players, and everyone on the list to your left should get a pat on the back should you see them at your local club.  Click on the image to your left to open it in a new browser - and let the celebration parties get underway!

ALL HAIL MINNESOTA'S STAC ROYALTY
Congratulations to the King and Queen of this month's Sectional Tournament at Clubs (and no, it's not called a "STaC" because the cards are STACked against you).  Your top masterpoint winners across the state of Minnesota are John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] who earned himself 13.69 masterpoints, and Barb Zipoy [Bloomington] who earned herself 8.16 masterpoints this week.  Our top Minnesota players in this month's STaC are listed on your left - but there were many, many more Minnesota players that got multi-colored points this week.  235 Minnesota players earned some black, silver, red, and gold over the past seven days - that complete list is here - or just click on the image to your left to check it out.

November 10 2024
MINNESOTA'S NEWEST DIAMOND LIFE MASTER
It's Kurt Schaeffer [Lakeville]!  Kurt went over the 5,000 masterpoint mark at the Autumn Harvest Sectional on a Friday afternoon.  The 62.06% game Kurt had with longtime partner Bob Balderson [Eden Prairie] earned him 6.36 masterpoints and enough scratch to go over the 5,000 mark.  Congratulations to Kurt on this huge acheivement.

November 9 2024
STAC STANDINGS (THROUGH THURSDAY GAMES)
The ACBL has issued their tentative STaC awards through Thursday games from this week.  John Schlundt [Eden Prairie] leads the field of Minnesota players with 13.69 masterpoints (so far!).  Another 22 Minnesota players earned some gold, red, black, and silver points on Thursday, with now 196 players having gotten some across our state.  A look at your masterpoint leaders is just to your right.

November 9 2024
NOVEMBER PLAYER OF THE MONTH
Congratulations to Sarah Wahl [Minneapolis], who is Minnesota's Player of the Month for November!  Sarah earned 69.97 masterpoints during October, that's the most of any player in our state.  Earning 26.80 masterpoints in the D14 NAP Finals and another 29.22 masterpoints at the Autumn Harvest Sectional helped propel Sarah to the #1 spot this month.  She just narrowly beat Jackson Wahl [Minneapolis] by less than a masterpoint (possibly that Friday morning game on the 11th?)  Your "Top 10" for November are listed to your left.  Many opportunities are out there for you to earn masterpoints in November, so get playing and perhaps be in the running for our player of the month for December.

November 8 2024
UPDATED MINNESOTA PLAYER STAC AWARDS
134  174 Minnesota players have earned some multi-colored masterpoints this week - and that's just through Tuesday  Wednesday evening!

Click on the image to your left for a look at how everyone is doing - so far - and remember these masterpoint awards aren't final until the ACBL says they are.  That might be some time next week (but sooner than some US Election returns, for sure).  In the meantime, the link to find the results for all of this week's STAC games can be found by clicking here.

MINNESOTA GNT QUALIFIERS - SO FAR

We are two months into the six month period for which you can qualify in the Grand National Teams competition.  So - how's it going?  It turns out 154 players in Minnesota have qualified to move on to the D14 GNT playoffs next March.  That list of qualified GNT players is on your left; click on that image to open the full list of Minnesota players in a new browser and find yourself.  (You will qualify to play in the D14 flight in which you qualified at the club level plus any higher flight, so there may be several "Q"s next to your name.)

73 of the 154 players are Flight "C" players (0-750), even though they can play in any flight for D14.  On the other hand, 8 Minnesota players that have qualified are over 6,000 masterpoints - and can only play in the Championship Flight.

EVERYBODY PLAYS THE FOOL - SOMETIMES
Let's face it, nothing hurts more than being fooled at the table by an opponent!  But at least we're all in this together.  Many years ago, Jack Rhatigan [Cottage Grove] emailed Peg Kaplan [Minneapolis] about a hand that stung pretty good - and Peg shared it with everyone else.  Click on the hand to your right to read Jack's disgruntlement at having to sign his email to Peg as "the victim".
